The Creator
The Creator is a movie set in the future during a war between humans and artificial intelligence. We follow Joshua an ex-undercover operative and Alphie the first simulant child. Simulantes are basically sentient AI robots built to elevate human lives.
This movie has a way of drawing you in from the beginning. The world-building for this movie is great because of the initial setup for this movie. This is a world where humans and AI work in tandem. Some places like New Asia have taken that to a new level where they live as one.
That all changed when a nuclear explosion went off in Los Angeles. They found out that it was a Simulant's fault so America banned all AI simulants from use. Thus the war on AI began where the amount of loss taking place on a frame-to-frame basis was insane.
The concepts that were explored through the trauma of war were hard to watch at some points. I almost cried multiple times in this movie because of the empathy I felt for both sides at different times.
Joshua and Alphie’s dynamic was something I didn’t expect to hit as hard as it did. It was because they were able to establish a certain innocence that worked well with the tone of the movie.
They replaced the idea of someone being “dead” by saying that they “turned off”. Using that as a caveat to the reality which is much darker. This in turn made me care more about Joshua and Alphie’s journey together. We saw the bond they developed throughout the movie naturally.
As far as the pacing for this movie it was good outside of travel time between chapters. The run time was a little long but the build-up made the payoffs worth waiting for.
This movie made me feel a variety of emotions from anger, to agony, to vindication all at the same time. Especially because of how it ended, I’m left to ponder what happens next. I love it when movies do that which is why I gave it a 9.5/10 G-Files Score.
